To announce/promote/celebrate our upcoming show premier as a DJ TRIO, we are releasing a new mix by DJ ILL PRIMO: TACOTACO mix.
Poppodium Brigant invited BTR to open for a Russian DJ called Kate NV. To honour the electronic tradition as well as the continental philosopher Slavoj Žižek, we decided to create a soundboard using his very distinctive voice. Accompanied by a few keyboards and an iPhone drumcomputer-app, we created the following improvised live show. Recommended to listen while working.
An ode to the Dutch television show "De Wondere Wereld" hosted by Chriet Titulaar. This live show was recorded on October 7th, 2016, at the White Suit Projections exhibition in Nijmegen. Curated by Danielle Papenborg.
Part of the "BTR Invites..." programme in collaboration with Circa...dit. This time we asked artist Rob Voerman if it was okay to do a show next to his work "The Exchange", which was exhibited on top of the Sonsbeek waterfall during "Sonsbeek '16: TransACTION.
Part of the "BTR Invites..." programme in collaboration with Circa...dit. This time we invited visual and auditive artist Manuel de Swaaf to form one-day-band GETREKT. The name comes from the term in gaming lingo, literally meaning "get wrecked".
A Kratwerk/Autobahn inspired live album. Also based on the Dutch expression "steenkolen Duits", which literally means "charcoal German", meaning the sound a Dutch person makes when trying to speak German, but being unfamiliar with the German language, except phonetically. Performed at Kasper's Graduation Show, ArtEZ Institute of the Arts, Arnhem. Personal favourite is "DER NEUE TEKTONIK TANZ".
Alllllllllriiiiiiiiight boys 'n girls! It's time for some punk, some garage, some... FRUTTELPUNK. This is a new type of music, only to be played in basements of lunchrooms. Major Schmetterling played a smashing show, with support by Indonesian artist collective Cut & Rescue. Our drummer left, so we had Schmisfits drummer Bram Derksen to fill in on drums, and he did great!
This is a live recording of an improvised audio book. It tells the story of Archibald and the Great Groebeloeris. It is recorded in Dutch, and features a few commercial breaks. Recorded at Circa...dit artspace, Arnhem.
For us at Broken Toaster Records, the way we work feels somewhat comparable to playing football on a muddy field. The main difference is that we take it very seriously. This was the main thought behind this event. In the weekend of May 12th, Broken Toaster Records was invited to participate in Incubate Festival, Tilburg. We decided to use the budget and space to create a football field with real grass, homemade football shirts and footballs with the BTR logo printed on them. We used the football field as a stage where we showcased a number of our precious bands, kind of like a retrospective exhibition. First, an old classic: Thom Thwaiter's Goat Suit, followed by Live Op Vlieland Reprise, which was an ode to the first record ever published by Broken Toaster Records. Our friends from Eco Italia did a live show. On the last day, Carmello Trio did an ambient set.
On the third day of Incubate, Jelle's voice was so messed up, he turned into an old man named Ome Jochem. We decided to use this extraordinary voice to retell one of the most classic fairytales in existence: Little Red Riding Hood.
Code Rood is a monthly exhibition which takes place in Buitenplaats Koningsweg, Arnhem. This is basically a piece of land where artists live and work. BTR performed in a building/artpiece called "Het Stookhuisje", which was built by artist Alphons ter Avest. We slept in "Het Stookhuisje", using it as a rehearsal space. The next day, CODE MALLOOT did a performance with a barbecue, grilling meat while performing.
On April 8th, Broken Toaster Records curated one night of MONO's opening weekend in Rotterdam (www.mono.ooo). The first band was Latte Macho & The Frappucino's. It consisted of two guys, one keytar, one CASIO VL1, one electric ukelele and one sound recording of a forest.
The second artist to climb the stage was DJ Gstarking. Mixing Rennaissance with Hardstyle, DJ Gstarking performed by sitting on a chair on stage, reading Darwin.
Next up, an old familiar to the Broken Toaster Records label: Eco Italia. With their unique entrance on stage (being dragged in, squeezed together in one sleeping bag) they immediately captured the crowd's full attention. They continued the show in style, changing outfits every ten seconds, blending fruit into different kinds of delicious smoothies and handing out drawings that were made on the spot. It was AWESOME!
With at least 17 people, The Show's Proposals is by far the biggest band to be released on Broken Toaster Records. Some of the instruments that were used are: a trumpet, a cajon, a keytar, a toy electric guitar, a didgeridoo and a xylophone.
This album is a shortened version of a live performance done by BRIK. This performance took place at "Circa...dit" gallery, Arnhem.
This band is inspired by Thom Thwaites' goat suit. Check out the YouTube video made by this great researcher. The sound is a live recording of a performance done at "Club Tilburg: Tu Sei Arrivato" in Tilburg. By accident, the band misspelled the true name of Thomas Thwaites.
